AVIATRIX
Aviatrix is an immersive journey into the skies of history, curated by visionary artist Ken "Tsunami" Shep. This series transcends mere visuals; it is a profound retelling of the stories of Black female pilots — particularly those whose courage and skill helped train the legendary Tuskegee Airmen — women who shaped the course of aviation history, some celebrated, many overlooked, all deserving of their flowers.
Through a striking series of hybrid canvas/acrylic prints, a generative film, and augmented reality integration, Shep invites viewers to witness the power, grace, and determination of women who defied the limits of their time. Each work serves as a testament to the resilience and brilliance of these trailblazers, whose contributions helped define a generation of heroes.
With deliberate intention, Aviatrix honors what has been remembered while confronting what has been lost — reflecting on the silent sacrifices and monumental achievements that shaped aviation history and the culture surrounding it. It prompts introspection into the gaps of our collective memory and the reclamation of identity, legacy, and pride.
Beyond its aesthetic boldness, this series serves a higher purpose — to ignite crucial conversations about race, gender, and the stories we choose to preserve. It challenges us to look deeper, to seek out the names and faces that history has dimmed, and to ensure they are seen.
Aviatrix is not just a series; it is a celebration and a reclamation. It is an invitation to look up — at the sky, at history, at the women who dared to conquer both — and bear witness to a legacy that was never meant to be forgotten.
Dedicated to the Aviatrix— thank you.
